CAESARIAN SCORES AGAIN.
The Sheffield track opened for its summer
meeting in a happy and handsome way. The
general establishment has been much improved.
The air was balmy, track fast, crowd large and
racing clean and eyeable. Eighteen regular
and two field books did a good business, and as
all the winners except My Luck were well
backed, the public had a good day. Only two
actual favorites, Zamar II and Caesarian, both
at odds on, won. Sunny, also at odds on, failed.
The fields were not large, but the racing out of
them was classful and full of interest.
THE LATONIA DERBY FIELD.
The Latonia Derby which is an old fashioned
one in distance and staunch conditions as to
weights is to-day’s racing piece at Covington
where the Latonia Jockey Club opens its Sum-
mer meeting. The race gains nothing, but its
conservative lines and has scarcely a good field.
The modern sense of racing is in equalizing con-
ditions.
There ought to be some $13,000 to divide
among the three first in the race. Its field will
come from the seven below, only four of which
are worth consideration.
The principal events were an Owners’ Handi-
cap and a high priced selling race, both at
three-quarters of a mile. In the first named
there were five starters, and Sunny was consid-
ered a good thing, but Doctor G and Serena
were equally fancied. Sunny was off in front,
but D. Burns set out with Doctor G, and mak-
ing all the running, won handily by three
lengths, with Serena second, a length in front of
Sunny. His recent long distance races in heavy
going seem to have taken the edge off Sunny’s
speed.
In the selling race Magnet who was entered
not to be sold was an absentee. It is feared
that the injury he sustained on Tuesday is more
severe than was thought. Caesarian opened
favorite at 3 to 5, but a strong play on Simmons
drove him back to even money. He did not
remain there long and went to the post at
his opening price, Caesarian led all the way
and Simmons was the only one who could get
near him. Caesarian won handily by three
quarters of a length and pulled up lame. C.
Sloan who rode him said he felt the horse falter
at the sixteenth pole.
In the opening event Mollie King was favorite.
Lady Rose made the running. In the stretch
Mollie King joined her and in a driving finish
Lady Rose won by a nose, McHugh outfinishing
Clay.
Zamar II, the favorite, led the whole of the
journey in the 2-year-old race, and won easily
from Siegfried who ran a good race, pressing
the winner somewhat in the stretch.
In the second half of the seven furlongs Eagle
Bird was the favorite, but Full Measure was
well backed. The English mare got off in front
and staying there to the end won by a length
with Eagle Bird second, and Outgo a fair third.
The hurdle race produced a good finish be-
tween My Luck and the favorite, St. Brandon.
The weight told on the son of St. Blaise at the
finish and My Luck won by half a length.
Harry Blaylock has been engaged to ride for
the Foster Bros. Stable.
The inquest on little Hothersall was com-
menced yesterday and adjourned till to-day.
The remains, in charge of his brother, were
taken to New York last night.
